The Light up the Lakefront ceremony in Rio Gaitherburg, Maryland, is an annual celebration in early December that demonstrates fireworks over the lakefront pier, with multiple stations and commercial opportunities for the Rio company.

The Light Up the Lakefront returns to Rio and has been a frequent tradition in the community. Initially, this event was created to attract more foot traffic and media to the Rio area. People beyond the DMV area came to see this event, according to organizers. Two radio stations, HOT 99.5 and 97.1 WASH FM, hosted the occasion to bring even more eyes and ears to the gathering.

Junior Genivive Trinh, who has experienced the event, really enjoyed the atmosphere and the community.

“The vibe was overall really lively, and everyone that I saw was just having fun. I think that energy was contagious, and I had a lot of fun that night too.” Said Trinh.

The commercial strategies used to support Rio and its businesses were to offer sales on that day and advertise getting gifts for family and friends. They  called it the “Holiday Gift Guide.”

“There’s something about Rio Lakefront that makes the holidays shine just a little brighter. From the bustling boardwalk to our lineup of signature shops and restaurants, there is magic in the air.” According to the Rio shopping center’s official website.

The number of people coming to this event raised some Concerns about the parking situation. Many reminders on the Rio website page said to come earlier for an easier parking experience.

“Going back to the fireworks, you could see everyone huddled up and watching the fireworks despite it being so cold. I think it really brought the community together,” Trinh stated.
