The newly released Michael Jackson biopic Michael premiered in theaters on April 24, drawing significant attention from audiences and music fans eager to see a cinematic portrayal of one of music’s most influential performers.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film stars Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s nephew, in his acting debut as the singer. The movie traces Jackson’s rise from his early career with the Jackson 5 through his emergence as a global superstar, recreating many of his most famous performances and other milestones.
The film’s release arrives during a continued surge in biopics, as recent films about major artists including Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, and Elvis Presley have found high success rates and introduced classic musicians to younger audiences. The early turnout for Michael reflects ongoing public interest in stories centered around influential cultural figures.
Senior Thomas Vogel, a member of Poolesville’s Michael Jackson club, said he was especially interested in how the film captures Jackson’s life beyond his stage persona.
“I’m anticipating how they portrayed his lonely life of fame and the human side to his mythic nature,” Vogel said.
Michael Jackson remains one of the best selling recording artists of all time, known for albums including Thriller, Bad, and Dangerous. His impact extended beyond music into dance, fashion, and music video production, helping redefine modern pop performance and global entertainment culture.
Alexander Rai, the teacher sponsor of Poolesville’s Michael Jackson club, further discussed Micheal Jackson’s influence on pop culture.
“There was no one like him at the time, and he is the blueprint for all of today’s pop stars, especially dancers,” Rai stated.
Jaafar Jackson’s casting has also been widely discussed due to his physical resemblance to his uncle and his background as a performer, which filmmakers hoped would help recreate Jackson’s unique performance style on the screen.
Production of the film also involved adjustments during development due to legal limitations surrounding how the assault allegations leveled against Jackson can or cannot be depicted.
Director Fuqua, who was planning on boldly discussing these events as they strongly impacted Jackson’s life and legacy, was forced to pivot, and Michael went under major rewrites and refilming. The film now ends in 1988.
“Perhaps it will encourage viewers to listen to his music and learn more about him – the good and especially the bad,” Rai commented.
For most fans, however, the film’s main appeal lies in the depiction of Jackson’s performances through cinema.
“I hope kids can appreciate the greatness and aura of his performances,” Vogel said.
Following its strong debut, Michael has renewed conversations surrounding Jackson’s music and legacy, while also introducing his work to younger audiences encountering his career through film for the first time.
