On its 18th day of release, the edgy romantic comedy ‘Anyone But You’ starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell rose to #1 at the domestic box office.

The film grew to prominence in the social eye due to the relationship between the leading actors, Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. The pair sparked dating rumors after the two appeared close during interviews and red carpet events for the upcoming movie. After a public breakup between Powell and girlfriend Gigi Paris, rumors heightened developing anticipation for the film.

This film has a star-studded cast and directorship with Will Gluck from Easy A and Peter Rabbit directing the romcom and leading actress Sydney Sweeney from Euphoria producing the film, alongside supporting actors Alexandra Shipp from Tick,Tick…Boom! and Dermot Mulroney from My Best Friend’s Wedding.

‘Anyone But You’ has made $45 million at the domestic box office as of Jan. 9. Loosely based on Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing,” Powell stars as a finance student harboring deep emotional wounds, while Sweeney is a law student who isn’t sure she wants to be a lawyer. A meet-cute brings the two together over a shared love of grilled cheese.

The movie has earned a 51% Rotten Tomatoes rating from film critics, despite an audience score of 87%. Some users criticized the movie for its predictability and a “lack of both romance and comedy.”

One critic stated, “At the very least, it’s not Shakespeare. It’s not even “‘10 Things I Hate About You.’”

The film is predicted to revive the romantic comedy industry, which in recent years has been lacking life or luster. Regardless of criticism from viewers, the film is projected to gross $100 million worldwide, with its box office having grown by 9% this past weekend.
