The popular gaming platform Roblox is rolling out a new age-based account system in early June 2026, implementing stricter content restrictions and parental controls that could drastically change how younger users interact on the game.
This development, aimed at improving safety measures, will separate players into three categories: Roblox Kids, for those ages five-to-eight, Roblox Select for ages nine-15, and the regular version for ages 16 and over. Each group will receive different levels of access to games, chat abilities, and interaction with increased parental controls. By separating users into controlled groups, the company hopes to limit exposure to harmful content and create a safer environment for its child players.
“The goal is to create more age-appropriate experiences by tailoring content and safety features,” said Chief Communications Officer at Roblox Desiree Fish. “Age-based systems are an important step, but they work best as part of a broader approach.”
One of the most significant changes involves communication. Chat features will become more restrictive for younger players, gradually opening up with age. Developers will need to follow stricter guidelines for their games to maintain availability, including a Roblox Plus subscription, meaning some experiences may no longer be accessible.
For longtime players, the update raises concerns about the extent to which the update will leave a positive effect.
Junior Kayal Vinoth, a player of almost a decade, said the platform has already shifted in its safety approaches.
“I feel like this has been a big part of Roblox wanting to branch off from being just a space for kids and open itself up to adults,” Vinoth said. “This contradicts the whole point of the game, and it’s not a safe space for kids anymore.”
Vinoth also shared concerns about the effectiveness of Roblox’s current moderation systems.
“A lot of the moderation is AI which never works properly, and it makes it that much easier to bypass for both kids and adults,” Vinoth said. “This leads to malicious adults entering children’s spaces, which was one of the biggest reasons why the age restrictions started happening in the first place.”
The update is part of a recent trend in the technology industry, where companies are being pushed to take greater responsibility for their players’ safety. Age verification, parental controls, and heavy moderation are all a part of this trend and have become increasingly common in popular platforms.
Questions still remain about how effective these updates will actually be, as enforcing age restrictions can be difficult. Many users find loopholes to these restrictions, causing concern for both player integrity and safety. At the same time, stricter controls could change the game’s charm for good.
As platforms like Roblox continue to grow, the issue is no longer solely growth, but the responsibility of ensuring that innovation is not to the detriment of the safety, fulfillment, and trust of the community.
