Freshman golf player Myra Pone has placed 4th at the state championships and highly in various competitions.

Myra Pone started playing golf during the COVID-19 pandemic because her gymnastics gym was closed. While golfing began as just something for her to do, it became more than that when Pone learned more about the game and where it could take her.

Pone joined the Poolesville golf team this year and had a successful season. She’s competed in several matches, walking away with numerous wins and even recorded a low score of 34, finishing two under par.

“She is rock solid!” co-ed golf coach Dr. Hunsicker-Blair said. “Mentally and physically, both of which are essential for golf.”

Beyond her statistics, she has also been said to bring a positive attitude to Poolesville.

“Myra is the spirit of our team,” Dr. Blair said. “She is high energy, incredibly friendly, and inclusive with her teammates.”

During the golf season, Pone follows a practice schedule that consists of 5-6 days a week for 3-4 hours on weekdays and 5-6 hours on weekends. This time-intensive demand has made it hard to balance other commitments.

“Balancing school work, sports, and my hobby is extremely hard and especially stressful,” Pone shared.

She prioritizes getting as much work as she can done at school, even sacrificing some lunch periods to get ahead.

“I have learnt over time that managing my time well is extremely important and helpful, so I can also focus on my passion for golf,” stated Pone.

Poolesville’s golf team has also been a bright experience for Pone.

“Being a part of Poolesville Golf is very fun,” Pone said. “I have made lots of new friends and playing partners that I can practice with instead of being by myself, usually.”

Dr. Blair has shown great support for Pone’s continuation of the sport.

“I see her as a state champion! She is a journeyman when it comes to golf- consistently working to improve her game.” said Dr. Blair.

Since her start, she’s become a junior golfer for the Peggy Kirk Bell Girls Golf Tour (PKBGT) and has played in 155 competitions and beaten 91 of them.
