Oh, He Knows Ball: New Security Guard Joins the PHS Roster

Just last month, the security team welcomed its newest member, Mr. Rivelino Pierre. After years of scoring points in the European pro-basketball league, he’s shifted his role into becoming another friendly face around the school.

Pierre comes to us as a security guard from Rocky Hill Middle School. He expressed that after working with middle schoolers for a few years, he also wanted to experience working with high schoolers and was encouraged by those around him to try it out.

“Everybody said [that] I would be good at the high school level,” said Pierre.

Security head Mr. Bryant Covington complimented how quickly Pierre has fit into his new role.

“Honestly, he started to do things on his own without me having to say what to do,” says Covington. “I gave him his post orders, and he just went right with it. No questions asked. He learned the building really fast. I think in three days he knew where everything was.”

Prior to his experience as a security guard, he was drafted by Norway to play as a combo guard for Ammerud Basket in the European professional basketball league after college. He spent four years playing in Oslo, Norway and then one year in Köln, Germany.

After returning from playing basketball in Europe, Pierre contributed his skills towards coaching students around the county. He stated that his favorite part of the job was being able to encourage students to do their best and reach their fullest potential.

Pierre says that his coaching mentality is always making sure students and athletes are doing the right things and being in the right places.

“That’s my philosophy of, making sure [everyone is] doing what they need to be doing to be successful.” says Pierre.

Senior Emmanuel Chukwurah, a member of the basketball team, shared how Pierre has become a coach figure in his own life.

“When we first started playing, he seemed really good, and I started to study his game over time,” said Chukwurah. “He told me certain things that I should do to become better. With his helpful tips, over a couple of weeks, I saw improvements. He always gives me something new to work on.”
