Recently, Senior Alexavier Saunders hit a big milestone. On January 29th at the night’s Clarksburg High School contest Saunders scored a total of 27 points, consisting of 6 three pointers, which was exactly what he needed to total his 1000 career points.
He accumulated these points as a player on three different teams at three different schools: Serra Catholic Eagles, Kings Christian Academy Eagles, and his current team, Poolesville Falcons.
According to MaxPreps, Saunders made a total of 27 points during his 1,000-point performance at the Clarksburg game.
As of February 24, Saunders has scored 435 points in his senior season, per MaxPreps, and he has made 71 three-pointers. He is second in Division 2A boys basketball points per game and first for 3-pointers made.
Saunders has been on the basketball court most of his life. Starting his career at age two, Saunders is now playing on the Poolesville Varsity team.
When asked about why Saunders started playing basketball, he said that elite athletes like Stephen Curry and Kobe Bryant have inspired him to keep working towards his basketball goals. He also says that his “parents played a big role in him being passionate about basketball.”
Saunders says he focuses on consistency, saying “if you keep getting one percent better each day, over a long period of time, you will see immense improvement.”
Basketball plays a major role in his life according to Saunders. It has taught him how to work towards a goal, deal with adversity, he has also gained communication skills, and lasting friendships.
Saunders says a big part of the game is to “remember to have fun, and to never lose sight of the joy that basketball can bring.”
Saunders and the boys team take on Hammond for their first playoff game of the season on Feb. 28 at 6:30pm at Clarksburg High School (Poolesville’s designated home gym for playoffs due to ongoing construction).
