According to an MCPS Boundary Study, Charles W. Woodward High School will reopen after its closure 38 years ago in 1987 when it merged with Walter Johnson. Meanwhile, the building has served as Tilden Middle School from 1991 to 2020, and now houses Northwood High School while its building is being renovated. The building then began demolition, and Woodward is expected to open as its own school in the fall of 2027.
Another MCPS school expected to open in 2027 is Crown High School, located in Gaithersburg. Crown will be a brand-new school, and the planning for the building started back in 2021. The surrounding area has undergone construction over the years to build it into a developed retail center, along with apartments, which has caused the need to build a new school.
Damascus High School is also expected to expand and complete renovations by August 2027; it will then accommodate some Clarksburg High School students, as well. Upon completion, the building’s capacity will increase from 1,550 to approximately 2,250.
There was a virtual session hosted on April 7, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and an in-person session at Gaithersburg High School on April 9, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, to discuss the opening of Crown High School and the expansion of Damascus High School. The reopening of Charles W. Woodward High School was discussed via Zoom meeting on April 2, 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and the in-person meeting was on April 8 during the same time at Walter Johnson High School. The goal of these public community sessions is to inform about the scope and timeline of the boundary studies, to explain the process with regard to the Board of Education, and to improve the accessibility of information.
