On Sunday, Feb. 9th at 5:30 pm, the Eagles faced the Chiefs once again in the Super Bowl. When the Eagles and Chiefs previously met in Super Bowl 57, it was a tightly contested game that was decided in the final minutes. This time, roster changes, coaching strategies, and player performances shaped a new outcome.

Senior Ian Harper, an avid Eagles fan, stated, “With how good Mahomes and Reid are I assumed it would be a close contest.”

Despite Harper’s prediction of a tight game, the score was 40-22, the Eagles winning with an 18-point lead.

In 2023, the Chiefs won 38-35. The Eagles’ quarterback, Jalen Hurts, scored three rushing touchdowns and threw for another. The Eagles controlled much of the first half, taking a 24-14 lead into the half, but the Chiefs, led by Patrick Mahomes, mounted a second-half comeback. The game was marked by strategic play calling, clutch performances, and a controversial late holding penalty that helped set up Kansas City’s victory, cementing their fourth Super Bowl win in their program’s history.

This year was different. The Eagles led from the outset, leading 24-0 at halftime and extending their advantage to 34-0 before the Chiefs scored. Quarterback Jalen Hurts led the charge, completing 17 of 22 passes for 221 yards and scoring three total touchdowns, earning him the Super Bowl MVP title.

Senior and football fan Jair Sorto said, “Jalen played a perfect game, throwing beautifully to both Devonta Smith and AJ brown. He was focused the whole time and knew what he needed to do to get his revenge on the chiefs.”

Philadelphia’s defense, coordinated by Vic Fangio, also played a role in dismantling Kansas City’s offense. They sacked Patrick Mahomes six times and forced three turnovers, including a 38-yard interception return for a touchdown by rookie Cooper DeJean.

Harper believes that the key factor in the Eagles’ defensive dominance was Vic Fangio’s contributions.

Harper said Fangio “Countered all of the Chief’s plays perfectly and didn’t give Mahomes any space to work.”

Despite a late rally, the Chiefs team was outmatched, and the pursuit of a historic three-peat fell short.

Harper says, “This loss hurts them massively, but from what we see from the Chiefs they aren’t done. For example, losing 31-9 to Brady back in 2021 and then winning 2 straight Super Bowls is something that only the Chiefs can do. They know what needs to be fixed and they’ll get to do that this off-season.”
