As someone unfamiliar with musicals, I was blown away by Wicked. This adaptation of the beloved Broadway show captivated me with stunning visuals, powerful performances, and a story exploring friendship, identity, and social justice. Despite knowing nothing about the plot, the storytelling ensured I was never lost.
From the beginning, I was hooked. The film opens with Elphaba’s upbringing, highlighting her struggles. Born with green skin, she faces rejection—even from her father, who favors her sister. The character development was beautifully paced. Cynthia Erivo shines as the serious and intense Elphaba, while Ariana Grande brings charm and energy to the bubbly Glinda. I initially doubted Grande’s ability to execute Glinda, but her performance exceeded my expectations. Their early tension is layered, quickly revealing a more complex dynamic.
Elphaba’s powers are introduced early, setting her apart even further. Her green skin makes her an outcast, and her abilities leave others in awe, including Glinda. When they are paired as roommates, their contrasting personalities keep the audience engaged, and eager to see their evolving relationship.
The musical elements of Wicked are a perfect balance, enhancing the story rather than overshadowing it. The choreography is mesmerizing, and the songs are melodic and emotionally charged, blending seamlessly into the narrative. The costumes
Elphaba and Glinda’s relationship evolves into a deep and moving friendship. Through acts of kindness, they come to understand and accept each other’s differences, making their growth one of the film’s most satisfying aspects. Their journey left me in tears and lingered with me long after the credits rolled.
The subplot with Elphaba’s sister, who uses a wheelchair, and Boq is heartwarming. Encouraged by Glinda to pursue her sister superficially, Boq’s feelings eventually deepen, adding another layer of humanity to the story.
Wicked is more than entertainment, it’s a life lesson about embracing differences, staying true to oneself, and the power of love and acceptance. This cinematic masterpiece inspired, uplifted, and left a lasting mark on my heart.
