On Wednesday, Nov. 15, during the 5th period, the “Meet Your Heroes” event occurred in the College and Career Center. During this event, students met a Montgomery County police officer and a Frederick County firefighter, who shared their backgrounds, career experiences, and advice on how to pursue these professions.
Career Coach Ms. Michaela Clement organized the event with assistance from her student advisors, College/Career Information Coordinator Ms. Rosalie DeOto, and administrative staff. She also worked with the Montgomery County Career Advising Program (MoCo CAP), an organization dedicated to helping prepare students for career paths and college. MoCo CAP connected Clement with a police officer for the Meet Your Heroes event, and she reached out to a firefighter she knew personally. Clement says she plans on relying heavily on student feedback. She chose the careers represented in the event based on a student survey.
Clement aims to guide students through the transition from high school to college and career.
“Whether students are interested in attending college, pursuing trade school, or jumping directly into the workforce, there are so many opportunities available to them, and I want to help them explore these paths,” Clement said.
She plans to host a Meet a Pro event every month and offer individual career guidance. Students can look forward to potential events with engineers, doctors, and lawyers.
“Meet Your Local Heroes is just the beginning!” Clement tells students.
