Frederick County introduced flag football across all their high schools at the start of last school year, followed by Montgomery County this 2024 fall season.
All 25 Montgomery County high schools will be participating in the upcoming season, divided into 4 different divisions: The Trailblazers with 7 teams, The Innovators, The Dreamers, and The Pioneers, each with 6 teams. Poolesville is included in the Pioneers division along with Clarksburg, Damascus, Northwest, Seneca Valley, and Watkins Mill.
Before the season started, there were multiple skills clinics held by both the Baltimore Ravens and the Washington Commanders in partnership with Under Armour. The clinics gained the participation of numerous players throughout Montgomery County where they were taught the basic skills to master flag football. The Poolesville flag football team’s head coach, Mike Neubeiser, previously coached Northwest’s tackle football team, leading them to two Maryland State Championships in nine seasons. Neubesier took over Northwest’s program in 2011. In the following year, the program finished 1-9. By 2013, Neubeiser was at the forefront of the Maryland 4A championship trophy. By the time he stopped coaching NW he recorded an 84-28 record in nine seasons.
The season started with a scrimmage against Churchill, Richard Montgomery, and Gaithersburg, where the team went 2-0-1 (two wins and one tie). There are eight regular season games to follow, four home and four away. 12 out of the 23 players on the team are dual-sport, a new option to Montgomery County athletics. Dual sports give participating players a choice of a primary sport to which they will dedicate the latter part of their time during the season. This option is only available for girls playing flag football in addition to their other sport. This new addition brings new opportunities for MCPS athletics and PHS students, who can support the inaugural season ahead.
