Kevin McCarthy repeatedly loses bid for Speaker of the House
Chaos has gripped the House of Representatives since Tuesday as Kevin McCarthy continues his bid for Speaker of the House. As of Thursday night, the House had adjourned for a third time without electing a speaker. A small group of Republicans in the House has continually blocked McCarthy from receiving the 218 votes he needs to be elected. Though he has made concessions in an effort to earn their vote, McCarthy has now lost his bid for speaker 11 times. Business in the government cannot move on until a speaker is chosen. If Congress sits at this impasse for much longer, problems will arise from lack of action in the House. Several Republicans are leaving the Capitol on Friday, worsening McCarthy’s chances.
