The Sweet Lemon enhances gift shopping experience for community
From highschool teacher to business owner: Mrs. Horan explains the process and the mission behind opening up The Sweet Lemon, Poolesville’s newest gift shop.
On Nov. 13, 2021, the latest local gift shop opened up in Poolesville. The Sweet Lemon features quality gifts, a selection of home goods, and seasonal treats. Mrs. Katie Horan, along with her husband and business partner, Mr. PJ Horan, have lived in Poolesville along with their three children Johnny, Christopher, and Hallie since 2014. Horan had started her teaching career at Poolesville High School in 2005, and continued as a Staff Development Teacher at PHS while owning and operating The Sweet Lemon, later leaving her PHS position to focus on her store full time. The idea of a local gift shop first came to Horan when realized that she wanted to serve Poolesville with unique gifts that didn’t require residents having to leave town to buy. Already having a passion for interior decorating and hosting parties, The Sweet Lemon was right up Horan’s alley.
“I’ve always been drawn to places like these, like little boutiques,” said Horan. “Curation is a big aspect in the shop. Whether that was curating the actual space, curating personal gifts for someone, or curating the actual pieces bought, there is a personal touch everywhere.”
The attention to detail doesn’t go unnoticed by customers either. Longtime Poolesville resident, Alivia Tetlow, is thrilled anytime she gets to shop at The Sweet Lemon.
“My favorite thing about The Sweet Lemon is the atmosphere when you walk in,” said Tetlow. “The store is always so welcoming and seeing new things come out each season is so exciting. Knowing something like The Sweet Lemon is so close by is an amazing feeling.”
The busiest time for The Sweet Lemon is the holiday season from October to December. The Sweet Lemon’s importance within the community really shines through during this season, as staff members like Horan are willing to work outside of The Sweet Lemon’s hours to put together a gift on short notice.
“People also come in and ask for help gift wrapping when they can’t and I try to do as many sponsorships as I can!” said Horan. “I really want to be a part of what experience people have in this town.”
