Post Prom returns after four years
The last Poolesville Post Prom was in 2016, before any current students even started attending high school. This year, Sheryl Rosenberg has taken it upon herself to host the first Post Prom in four years, something that will hopefully become an annual event. She made the decision to bring back Post Prom after her son, Jack Rosenberg, a senior at Poolesville HS, came back from Walt Whitman HS’s Post Prom the year prior, and asked why Poolesville didn’t have a Post Prom.
Even the general Poolesville community, many of whom no longer have children in high school, have shown interest in the renewed Post Prom. Many of them are offering help through means of donations. “We’re reaching out to the community a lot, because they’re super supportive,” Rosenberg says. “I was at the PTSA table at the tree lighting in Poolesville last weekend. And the number of people who are significantly older who came up to the table and said ‘I know they haven’t had a Post Prom since 2016.’…They haven’t had a student here [in a long time], but they care.”
Perhaps one of the previous deterrences to hosting Post Prom was the fact that the prom itself is often hosted in Rockville, and not many attendants would want to drive all the way back to Poolesville, when they could potentially just go to a friend’s house nearby. To counter this, Rosenberg arranged buses that will take students straight from the Rockville Hilton venue to Poolesville, and for students that drove themselves to the dance, another set of buses will take these students back to the venue site in the next morning.
Another reason for buses is also to avoid accidents and reckless driving overall. Students are bound to be tired by the end of the night, and many students are also on provisional licenses, and shouldn’t be driving at the time either. Safety is emphasized throughout, from giving students a safer mode of travel to a safer activity after prom instead of attending parties that risk underage drinking. Post Prom would be an event where students can have fun, parents wouldn’t have to worry about their children, and neither have to do any planning.
As for the Post Prom itself, Rosenberg has a lot planned already. The theme is “A Night in the Roaring 2020s” based on the glittering, glamorous aesthetics of the 1920s. Not only will the school be redecorated to fit the theme, the committee is also hiring a comedic hypnotist and a DJ. One room will play silent films through the night, while another becomes a casino room with prizes instead of real money. Plus, there will be a raffle drawing every fifteen minutes, with prizes ranging from gift cards to dorm decorations to an HDTV.
Poolesville Post Prom goes from 11:00 p.m. on April 24th to 5:00 a.m. on April 25th.
