Special counsel investigation of election continues amid fears of Russian involvement

Since May 17, 2017, special counsel Robert Mueller has been investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, looking specifically into possible connections between President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign and the Russian government.

Former FBI director Mueller was called upon to lead the probe into Russia’s involvement with the election and the Trump campaign in May 2017. Even with the sheer amount of new coverage the investigation has earned, much of Mueller’s work thus far has remained secret. Yet, the special counsel has made a number of public moves. These have included filing charges against George Papadopolous, Rick Gates, Paul Manafort, and Michael Flynn – ranging from false statements to conspiracy against the United States – as well as the recent subpoena of Stephen Bannon, all of whom have worked for President Trump in the past. As recent as December, the Washington Post reported that Mueller is “following the money” and that this may “put Trump in serious danger,” alluding to the Trump organization’s business dealings over recent years. At the same time, both houses of Congress have been conducting their own inquiries into Russia. Much of their work is under wraps as well. Their most public events thus far have been the testimony of former CIA director James Comey as well as upcoming questioning of current political advisors to the President.

Though the White House remains adamant that the investigation will conclude smoothly and quietly in the beginning of this year, according to the Washington Post, “members of Mueller’s team have told others they expect to be working through much of 2018, at a minimum.”
