State champ swim team looks to dominate in higher division

The PHS Swim and Dive team has recently been moved up to Division I, elevating their competition and proving their eliteness. Last season, boys swim won all three of their meets, while the girls team won two meets. However, both the boys and girls swim teams went on to become 2017 MPSSAA 321A State Swim Champions, dominating the South Regional Meet. For the dive team, junior Bryce Davis finished 8th at state finals, with a score of 208.3.
Current sophomores Moshelle Borjigin and Helena Narisu, juniors Bryce Davis, Allison Foppe, Rachel Ryan, and Autumn Wang, and seniors Katarina Lechner, Zachary Nachod, Kevin Song, and Julia Wang stood out at last year’s championship meet for both swim and dive. They will hope to repeat their success in the upcoming season with new and improved competition. Both swim and dive have been dominant at states over the past few years. This is the fourth title and third consecutive for girls swim. This is the boy’s teams sixth total championship, all consecutive over the past six years.
They should be confident with plenty of underclassmen proving their success at the top level last year. Lechner, Nachod and Wang were named captains this year, along with seniors Christian Fuhrmann, David Umansky and Roger Yerger.
The D1 move could’ve been foreseen with the dominance of the teams over the past few years: not just winning states, but often winning by large margins. In the latest state championship, the boy’s swim team finished with a score of 347.5, while runner up Middletown finished with just 197.5. Women’s swim ended the match with a score of 363, while Easton High School finished with 233.
Senior swim captain Fuhrmann states “We are going to be facing teams that are a lot better than last year. All of the captains, including myself, really want to focus on having fun and making the most of everything.”
Borjigin says “I think the expectations of the team and it’s success has increased to an incredibly high standard. Like the expectations, I feel as though the motivation to reach those expectations has grown. So, hopefully with the positivity of a new team and hard work, PHS swim will be able to accomplish some new goals.”
With a new stock of players, and a new division, the team hopes to continue their dominant play going into the 2017 season.
