New tennis coach Andy Johnson leads girls to 5-6 record

PHS’s girls tennis team ended their fall season with a record of 5-6. They had narrow losses to three division rivals, led by new head coach Andy Johnson.

Coach Johnson hopes to build upon this year’s successes as they prepare for next year’s season.

Johnson remarks that, “The team is a positive, motivated and talented group of girls who demonstrate a high-level of sportsmanship, regardless of the match score. Being associated with them is my favorite part of coaching the team.”

Over the course of the season, the team had two goals in goals in particular that they wanted to achieve: making sure each player had a rewarding experience and ensuring that each player improved over the course of the season. Through their hard work and dedication, the team was able to accomplish both, according to Johnson. Coach Johnson noted in particular that the doubles team played exceptionally well together and was able to notch many victories against some of their toughest competition.

Their record included 7-0 shutouts against Magruder, Paint Branch, and Einstein. They also defeated both Kennedy and Clarksburg in 6-1 games. They will remain in Division II for next year, which is the second highest of four county tennis divisions. The team is relatively young, with only two seniors on a team of fourteen.
